BC FoodProWest 2015, "A Taste of Success" - 2015
June 17th and 18th saw Kaslo Sourdough in Vancouver for the BC Food Processors Conference, BC FoodProWest. This intimate event included us and approximately 35 other phenomenal BC food producers.
The Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Center hosted a lively International Buyers Day, where we learned about what it means to export abroad to countries like the United States, China, Japan, and Korea. We met with representatives from all sorts of companies; it was a whirl of a day!
We manned our booth for both days of the conference, and on the evening of the second day, we settled into our seats at the awards gala with excitement. The pasta had been nominated for two awards: Product of the Year, and for the Innovation Award. We were honoured to win the Innovation Award and were also stunned when the pasta also took home bronze for Product of the Year! What a night! We will remember it for a long time to come.
Kelowna Health Show 2015
Before the heat of the summer hit the Okanagan, the Lettrari sisters brought Kaslo Sourdough Pasta to the Kelowna Health Food Show, April 25th and 26th! What a busy event it was for us!
The wintertime curling rink was transformed into a well-organized, black carpeted and curtained hall that welcomed everyone in. Our booth shared the company of about 95 other vendors for the weekend. As well as demonstrations, there were a number of seminars that were hosted upstairs. We appreciated the buzz that Lisa Kilgour, RHN, gave the pasta during her talk titled “Healthy Gut, Healthy Life,” which covered some of the basics about the benefits of fermented foods.
Natural Products Expo West
We successfully introduced our 'Pasta Fermentata™' at the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California, from March 4th – 8th! As a Canadian Food Producer from the small town of Kaslo, we were proud to represent BC in the Western Canadian Pavilion. There was a record of 71,000 attendees and almost 2,700 exhibitors!
We are honoured and excited to report that our fermented pastas were nominated for the prestigious award of "This is What’s Next” for 2015. Look out for the public voting, later this year!
Natural Products Expo West 2015, Anaheim California
Kaslo Sourdough is looking forward to attending one of the largest natural, organic and health products expos in the USA this coming March: Natural Products Expo West (NPEW)! We will be exhibiting ‘Pasta Fermentata™’ at NPEW in Anaheim, California USA from March 5th – 9th. We will be representing British Columbia as a food processor in the Canadian Pavilion located in Hall D. Please stop by and visit us at Booth #3578 if you’re also there!
Our trip is being supported by the Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (STEP) and funding has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the BC Ministry of Agriculture through the BC Agrifoods Export Program under Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. The program is delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC.
We hope that exposure at this event will lead to openings in US export markets, and making contact with potential buyers for health food grocery stores and chains. As the only (known) producer of fermented pasta, we see an incredible opportunity to expand our business with an excellent product that has multiple health benefits. Many people are also increasingly suffering from digestive ailments, especially with the digestion of wheat and gluten-containing grains, so for these people (and others), we provide a much-needed product that is nutritious, easy to digest, and that contributes to healthy living. We anticipate that the demand for such a product will only increase in the future and can see a trend of fermented foods evolving in the natural health food industry.
We're happy to announce that our attendance is being supported by:
Simulating Health Eating - 2014
It was with enthusiasm and excitement that Kaslo Sourdough took part in the BC Food Processor Association's "Stimulating Healthy Eating" Project. As an innovative research project, the study focused on determining the impact of providing social media support to 10 local, BC products that were selected on the basis of their quality, nutritiousness and who met the BC Healthy Eating Guidelines. The social media posts were designed to help educate consumers about healthier products, and we were happy to have been selected as one of 10 BC companies that took part in the project! You can find our link in the project here or watch the video on YouTube.
This was the first year the West Kootenay Permaculture Co-op organized a festival coined FarmFoodFork. It is a “food-focused gathering for hundreds of Kootenay Boundary stakeholders: farmers, producers, retailers, chefs, consumers, advocates, food groups, policy makers, butchers, ranchers and beekeepers…” It was a very successful and rewarding event, with many local farmers, processors and speakers present. This event also sparked the launch of a new website for foods grown and/or produced in the Kootenay region. You can check it out here.

Canadian Health Food Assiociation Conference (CHFA)
On April 13-15th, 2013 my family and I attended the CHFA Western Conference held in Vancouver, BC. There were a variety of booths displaying their products, as well as many visitors eager to see what’s new and exciting in the health food industry. Our Sourdough Pasta had a very positive reception as many retailers and consumers were looking for a local, healthy food.
Many people also expressed much interest and positivity when we explained the difference the sourdough bacterial culture makes for digestion and increasing the bioavailability of nutrients and minerals in each of the grains used in our pasta. People were also excited and surprised by the fast cooking time for the pasta (about five minutes). We met many knowledgeable people ranging from suppliers, marketing teams, distributors, retail outlets as well as folks interested in buying our pasta for home use right away. All in all, it was great event in terms of exposure for our new product.

There were a few local faces in this Kelowna store, as many young Kaslonians have moved to this part of the Okanagan. They were an extra bit excited to see a product from their hometown being sold outside the Kootenays. Many other people were also excited about sourdough pasta, and happy to see another local product on the shelves. There are many unique and exotic products in this store, and many busy shoppers were interested in this new product. We were happy to give out as many samples as we did, and to leave this city on such a positive note.
